Fly from London to Munich and transfer to the picturesque village of Oberammergau, nestled in the foothills of the Austrian Alps. The rest of the day is at leisure, perhaps to explore the narrow streets of the village and admire the many painted houses displaying the Lüftlmalerei artistic style. Dinner is included at your hotel or guest house.
There is further time to relax the following morning. After lunch at an excellent local restaurant, we make our way to the dramatic 4,700-seat theatre to enjoy the iconic Passion Play – a breathtaking five-hour retelling of the life of Christ from his entry to Jerusalem to his resurrection. Every performance in this season of awe-inspiring theatrical events involves 2,000 Oberammergau villagers (around half the population) and a full orchestra, bringing together the community as it has done by tradition since the plays were first performed in the 17th Century. But watching the play on a Sunday, as we do, somehow imbues the experience with extra significance and emotion. A three-hour interval divides the play into two parts, and we take the opportunity to savour a fine dinner during the break. The play concludes at around 10.30pm, at which time we return you to your hotel or guest house.
